Title
Alleluia to the Heart of Stone
Year
1984
Instrumentation
for reverberated recorder
Notes
The result of an afternoon I spent in Amsterdam with Frans Brüggen, whose mastery of the instrument is legendary. He spoke, not only of Renaissance and Baroque Recorders, but of the remarkable techniques he had developed for playing them expressively. The title, from Teilhard de Chardin, alludes to the acoustical qualities of stone buildings and to the vast reverberant spaces of San Francisco's Grace Cathedral, where Frans played the premiere.
