Title
The Seasons
Year
1978
Instrumentation
For mixed chorus
Notes
The University of Wisconsin at River Falls commissioned a series of works by American composers. The Seasons is a set of four chorals songs, with only two words for each season, whose alliteration often suggests the seamless flow of the cycle. At the end of autumn, the first notes of winter are heard again. Each of the four seasons reflects the music of a different non-western culture: Japan, Indonesia, Tibet, Sub-Saharan Africa. In "Summer" the voices produce multiphonics by isolating the harmonics in various vowels above a constant fundamental.
